Nevada County is known for being beautiful with its peaceful scenery, free-range wildlife, and friendly community. It also has almost 20 rivers flowing through it, including the Yuba River, which is a popular site for locals and tourists alike. However, enjoying the river comes with risks and visitors should do so safely. In a phone interview with Nevada County Sheriff Shannon Moon on March 27, she said, “If we’re not patrolling it, there’s tragedy.”
Art is at the core of being human. We create as a way to make tools and survive, and we make art as an expression of beauty and love. While some have dismissed art and its significance to society, deeming it “unproductive,” I interviewed local artists and an art collective who are sure to challenge that idea. These creatives use art in vital ways to express, heal, and forge change.
In this 3:25 video, reporter Tyler Williams highlights the impact Therapy Dogs can have on students’ mental health at Sierra College. Every Tuesday in the library, students have the opportunity to connect with friendly therapy dogs. This gives students a break from studying and some comfort.
On March 3rd, 2025, Governor Gavin Newsom issued an Executive Order requiring that California State workers return to work, from working remotely at home, to in person four days a week, effective July 1st, 2025. The Order will continue to offer case-by-case telework exceptions, if necessary. It also includes a goal to hire former federal workers along with firefighters and forest service staff seeking employment throughout this transition.
Given everything that occurs on campus, it can be easy to forget how much planning goes into scheduling, organizing and running each individual event. These tasks are assigned to senate members of the Associated Students of Sierra College, or the ASSC.

With the current state of the world, it is inevitable that anyone, especially a college student, will encounter stress. While stress may be positive in some situations, building motivation and enabling goal-setting tendencies, it may also cloud our minds and invite anxious or depressive behaviors.
Combat sports have gained popularity in recent years, particularly among college students. With this recent rise in interest, Sierra College students might be curious about what kind of changes combat sports could bring to their lives. In this 7:16 min. video, reporter H.A. Garcia visits Main Event Muay Thai & Kickboxing, a Muay Thai gym located in the Northgate/Gardenland area of Sacramento.
Seeing people who look like you matters– it makes people feel included. Many of the people I interviewed at Sierra College in fall 2024 felt the same way. Robert Scott, a student in the Umoja program at Sierra said, “Diversity is pretty important,” in an interview on Oct. 17. He continued, “You never want to feel uncomfortable walking around campus or in the classroom, like you’re the only one of your race, anywhere. I mean like let’s say there’s 10 Black people and you’re the only white person, you’d feel uncomfortable because you don’t fit in. I’m sure you understand!”
Sierra College will have a new theatre production under its belt this fall 2024 with a performance of Romeo and Juliet, playing now through November third in the Dietrich theatre on the Rocklin campus. The play is directed by Scott Adams who has directed more than a dozen shows throughout his ten years as a Sierra College professor.
