Combat sports have gained popularity in recent years, particularly among college students. With this recent rise in interest, Sierra College students might be curious about what kind of changes combat sports could bring to their lives. In this 7:16 min. video, reporter H.A. Garcia visits Main Event Muay Thai & Kickboxing, a Muay Thai gym located in the Northgate/Gardenland area of Sacramento.
Muay Thai is a striking combat sport that originated in Thailand during the Sukhothai Kingdom of the 13th century. The term “Muay Thai” roughly translates to “Thai boxing.” It is known as the “art of the eight limbs,” since this martial art utilizes eight points of contact with a fighter’s two fists, legs, elbows, and knees. Muay Thai has been integral to Thai culture for hundreds of years, so much so that Muay Thai is recognized as Thailand’s national sport.
Lino Enriquez first found his interest in Muay Thai after his older brother and cousin started training. He didn’t think he would go down the path of a martial artist, but life proved him wrong.
Garcia details how Main Event owner, Lino Enriquez, is using Muay Thai as a vehicle for those wishing to make a change in their lives. Whether that be through his gym, amateur fight promotion, or by being a part of a new movement that is already making waves, Lino Enriquez has no shortage of ways to give back to the sport he loves.
Younger brother and pro-fighter, Leo Enriquez, also shares his views on the sport and what the gym means to him in the video. Many athletes who belong to the Main Event gym in fall 2024 appear in it as well, including Brandon Ramirez, Kacey Defiesta, Dani Anderson, Jarius Beacham, Teri Barlow-Nartker, Devin Flores, and others. Garcia thanks them for their participation and sharing their sport with Roundhouse.
