Safe at Last: Animal Place

In this 4:30 min. video, Evie Walsh and Nia Marin tour Animal Place, an animal sanctuary in Grass Valley, Calif. They are accompanied by Sonya Sistito, Development Associate of Animal Place, as they walk along the property and learn more about animal cruelty and farming.

At the Museum of Animal Farming, there are photos and statistics about the lives of animals being raised for their product. In the dairy industry, cows are more likely to gain infections from overmilking. Broiler chickens, who are raised solely for their meat, are grown with various complications in key parts of the chicken’s body. For more about commercial farming issues, view Animal Place’s website.

In 2022, California passed Prop 12, which made freedom of movement for an animal in confinement the legal standard. It also provided a minimum space that animals must have while being farmed. However, this legislation is at risk to be overturned by Congress, and many people still don’t think enough action has been taken to stop animal cruelty and slaughtering practices. As a result, some have turned to veganism to protest the farming industry.

Within the sanctuary, we meet Davey and Beethoven, two animals with extraordinary stories of being saved from slaughter by Animal Place.

Anyone can volunteer at Animal Place and hang out with the animals and keep their spaces safe and clean. For anyone who is looking to do volunteer work, learn more about veganism and animal cruelty, or tour the sanctuary and museum, check out Animal Place!
